The Inclined Music Career of
Playboi Carti
Written by Canden Robinson
Jordan Carter, also known as Playboi Carti, is a young 21-year-old inspiring new rap artist, from the lower south side of Atlanta Georgia. Playboi
Carti was born on September 13, 1996 in Atlanta, Georgia, yet grew up in Fairburn, Georgia. He is very well known for his famous “Mumble Rap” and a swag that most cannot help but acknowledge. Playboi “Jordan Carter” Carti graduated from North Springs High School in South Atlanta. He was an all-star basketball player for his high school, until he decided to take his other talent to the next step. That other talent being, rap music. Carti was so high up on beginning his music career that he began “cutting classes” just to go to the studio and record.
After graduating from high school, Carti decided to leave his nest in Atlanta and move to the South Side of the Bronx, New York. There is where he met one of his favorite rap artists, A$AP Rocky. A$AP Rocky took Carti up under his wing and showed him the ins and outs of the rap game. However, before signing with A$AP Rocky and Interscope Records, Carti was signed to Awful Records in which he recorded several mixtapes. One of his favorite mixtapes that he recorded with Awful Records was, “Young Misfit”, which he recorded in early 2012. While still signed to Awful Records, Carti went by the name Sir Cartier. AT 17 years old, he dropped the name Sir Cartier and came up with Playboi Carti.
Playboi Carti began to move around and get his music out there. He moved from Atlanta to the Bronx of New York, to Houston Texas and then, back to Atlanta. Although he moved back to Atlanta, he was always traveling back and forth to New York. He began touring, performing on high end stages and making music features with other big artist such as Lil Uzi Vert, A$AP Rocky and Leven Kali.
Along with his music, Playboi Carti had a mind for design. Before pushing his music career in full, he thought about starting a fashion clothing line. According to Carti, he was the first male to start wearing skinny jeans and was picked on for wearing them to school. Now, in today’s age, wearing skinny jeans is one of the hottest new trends out there. Although fashion was not his first choice, since starting his music career, Carti has begun working on a few fashion projects to build his brand.
Carti had many influences growing up. He grew up listening to Michael Jackson and Prince. He also enjoyed listening to Gucci Mane, Lil Jon and A$AP Rocky. These were just some of the artists that inspired Carti to get into the game of music. A$AP Rocky is who really changed everything for Playboi Carti. Upon meeting A$AP Rocky at a local house party in the Bronx, Carti began talking to him and telling him his dreams of becoming a rap artist. A$AP Rocky took him in and signed him to Interscope Records under his name. From that point on, it was only up for Playboi Carti.
Playboi Carti’s music career has taken off like a rocket. He has been featured in several big name hip-hop magazines, including XXL. Carti just released his first debut mixtape “Playboi Carti” this past April of 2017. In just under 5 months, his mixtape has reached number 12 on the billboard 200 charts and number 7 on the hip-hop album charts. One of his most highly recognized songs that had the whole world jamming was, “I Woke up Like This.” Fans all over the world were using “I Woke up Like This” hashtag on their own photos and placing them on Twitter and Instagram.
This young inspiring artist had thing for people and big crowds. Performing and meeting so many of his favorite artists was a dream come true. Most artists he worked with would say he was such a charismatic individual, very fun, loving and down-to-earth. His family was so proud of his accomplishments. His mother always thought he’d be just like his brother, who was into the streets, drugs and money. What is crazy about that is the fact, he was afraid of falling into that lifestyle, which is one of the reasons he pushed so hard to become something different and he has. Playboi Carti is currently working a few mixtape projects with some of today’s hottest rap artists. Because the projects are still in the making, the names of those artists will not be released until early 2018. Until then, keep your eyes peeled on this inclining new rap artist and enjoy the ride as he would say.
