WhentheNightcalls
If you partied anywhere in the past year it's very likely you have
heard the well produced, dark tornado, that is the music of upcoming
hip hop recording artist Travis Scott. The beat making prodigy’s
studio debut Rodeo, was released in september of 2015. The album
debuted at number one on top of the Billboard’s Top rap albums, and
number three on the top 200 albums in the country. The record is
carefully infused with hitmakers such as,Young Thug,
Juicy J, Justin Bieber, Future, The Weekend, Kanye West, and 2 Chainz. Born Jacques
Webster II, Scott(23) was raised in Houston, TX. Starting out as a
producer for other artist in the industry, Scott has found a place in
hip hop music’s “Trap invasion”, with a distinctive voice as the
modern sin soaked rebel.
The rapper shows obvious influences,T.I, Kid Cudi, and Kanye west.
Somewhere beneath his chaotic, wild presence, lives an artist with a
lot of life and a lot to say. This is evident when he talks about
giving back,” My grandma, she stay in the hood. I got family that
live in the hood. That ain’t tight. That ain’t no type of place to
claim, or wanna be from. You know what I’m saying? You put on for your
hood, in the right way. There’s mad kids like me. Creative. It’s not
about your location, it’s your mind.”(Grantland.com)It is the delicate
production value of Scott’s work that sets him apart from the current
authors of trap rap. Scott signed to Epic Records in 2012, where he
quickly became an in house producer for Kanye West’s GOOD music
Imprint. That same year he signed to T.I’s Grand Hustle Imprint as an
artist. Much like one of his creative idols, Kanye west. Scott is a
skilled producer turned rap artist who is looking to make a definitive
statement on his presence in the head bobbing, dabbing, hip hop
landscape. His producer credits include songs for, Kanye
West(Yeezus), Rihanna(BBHMM), Madonna(Rebel Heart), Big
Sean(Hall of Fame), Wale(The Gifted), Jay Z(Magna carta Holy
Grail), just to sprinkle a few. Scott has two previously released
mixtapes. The first being Owl Pharaoh(2013) and the second Days
before Rodeo(2014). Both bodies of work display the great production
skills that scott is known for, and his wild party boy persona is on
full display. Check out fan favorites, “Upper Echelon”, and
“Mamacita”. Those new to the work of Scott are likely aware of the
artist’s biggest hit, the lush, party all night, dark anthem,
“Antidote”. The song is the second single off Rodeo. The song peaked
at number sixteen on the Billboard 100 chart. It has became a cult
anthem for millennials who bob their heads in a smoke filled car ride,
to the next party.
Scotts beams on the track, “Don’t you open up that window, don’t you
let out that antidote”. Lyrically Scott speaks from the state of his
personal adventures. Wild nights at the after party, shots on the
island, models, bottle service, exclusive selection to participate in
the fantasy of every trap music fan. The allure of this lifestyle, is
smoothly layered all throughout Rodeo. Tracks like, “Nightcrawler”,
find Scott in a hyper state of frustration with the lack of bottles
and models, he announces “Someone kill the lights, I brought the party
favors, Just get piped”. The eccentric, “Piss on your grave”, finds
Scott paired with frequent collaborator and mentor, Kanye West, in a
heated, blood pumping, spit in your face, production. The collaboration
is a shining star in the often intense production that includes, heavy
drums, bass, synths, and custom auto tuned laced tracks. Scott is just
as complex as his hitmaking beats.
He has gained a reputation for having wild night shows, where fans go
nuts for the shirtless volcano of energy that he exhibits. If the work
of an artist is their only statement, Travis Scott wants the world to
know he lives life on the edge of his desires. It is unsure where
exactly Scott aims to go in his career. He is one of the most creative
producers today, with many big name backers to create hits for.
Whether the artist attempts to carve out a deeper rap footprint or
not, time will only tell. The only thing clear is that whatever the
polarizing Travis Scott does next, it won’t be boring.
