Joell Ortiz Interview in F.E.D.S. Magazine

Joell Ortiz Interview

F.E.D.S. Magazine:  Let the people know who you are,.where you from
and what you Rep?

Joell Ortiz:  My name is Joell Ortiz. I'm a Puerto Rican dude from
Brooklyn, NY. I'm a recordings artist.

F.E.D.S. Magazine:  Your big break in the music business was your deal
with aftermath when and why did you part ways with the label?

Joell Ortiz: Aftermath records gave me my 1st deal in 2006. I also had
a record deal with E1, formerly known as Koch Records, at the same
time. I worked it out legally so that the deals could coexist. I asked

to leave Aftermath back then because I was young, excited, and to be
quite honest, impatient. I had built up such a buzz in these streets
that I didn't want to wait for another Em album and then the Detox
before my album dropped. And that's what I was asked to do. So I asked
to be released and Dr. Dre honored that. We're still friends to this
day and even joke about the fact that I ended up back in the family!
(Slaughterhouse being on Shady Records).

F.E.D.S. Magazine: Whats going on with the  slaughterhouse movement?
Joell Ortiz:  Speaking of SlaughterHouse, our movement is FANTASTIC.
We're gearing up for the next project, and about to start filming for
"Total Slaughter 2". That's our Rap Battle league that took the scene
by storm! All the guys supported me on my "House Slippers" album, and
have solo ventures of their own coming soon. We're a machine. Many
working parts with equal value. I have a blast working with Joe
Budden, Crooked I, and Royce da 5'9. They're my brothers.

F.E.D.S. Magazine:  What made you interested in joining a 4 man rap
team after entering the game as a solo artist?

Joell Ortiz:  To be honest, the group formed itself. We leaked a
record that we did for Joes "Halfway House" mixtape and the net went
crazy!! Fans demanded more music and so we did that. More music.
Labels called shortly after and we had a situation on E1 in NO TIME.
The success of that album got the ear of Mr. Marshal Mathers, a long
time friend of Royce, and before you knew it, we were on Shady
Records!! We're still there and we love it. Shouts to Paul, Trace, and
the staff!

F.E.D.S. Magazine:  So I tuned into the whole total slaughter battle
competition, are you a big fan of the rap battle culture?

Joell Ortiz:  I always liked the battle scene. I fell in love with Hip
Hop doing cyphers on the corner. Your bars HAD TO be sharp in order to
survive. Battle rap, in my opinion, are a direct spin off of that.
Cyphers. No one verbally said they were battling, but you definitely
wanted to have a better rhyme than the person before or after you in a
cypher. It's grown a lot tho. More theatrics, schemes, and even stage
antics. It's a lot of fun to watch.

F.E.D.S. Magazine: Who would you say is your favorite battle rapper?

Joell Ortiz:  Don't know if I have a favorite battler right now. It
used to be Daylyt, but he's been doing a bit too much lately. Lol. I'm
sure "Total Slaughter 2" will make me a fan of someone new.

F.E.D.S. Magazine:  Would you ever do what Joe burden did and partake
in a actual battle with any of them?

Joell Ortiz:  They want me to battle. EVERYONE wants me to. Fans,
Slaughter, battle rappers, and the show producers. Have at said yes,
haven't said no. But if I do decide to enter the ring, I'll have a new
favorite battle rapper. ME.

F.E.D.S. Magazine:  So now you have a new solo album out  What is it called?

Joell Ortiz:  My new album is called "House Slippers". I named it that
because I was really comfortable with myself and everything
surrounding me during this recording process. I just let the pen
script my story. Whatever I felt like talking about, I did. Day 1 fans
learned more about me, and new fans got to know me. I love this album.
A lot of growth. I even took some chances on the kind of beats I
selected to rhyme on. Definitely kept the bars up, and also got a
chance to talk to myself on a track called "Say Yes". My personal
fave.

F.E.D.S. Magazine:  Do you have any features on the album?

Joell Ortiz:  I got B.O.B, Maino, and a few up and comers on the
album. Wanted to keep the features low being that it's been 4 years
since my last solo project. Had a lot to talk about, as I'm sure you
know lol.

F.E.D.S. Magazine:  Not to talk about old shit but why do you think
Cuban links got upset over you remaking a big pun song some years
back?

Joell Ortiz:  Old shit is old shit. That sounds more like a Cuban Link
question to me. RIP Big Pun. A legend.

F.E.D.S. Magazine: What produces do you have on the album?

Joell Ortiz:  The album was executive produced by the HeatMakerz. ILL
Mind had a huge hand in production as well tho. Sha Money XL,
Frequency, Profit and Operator Emz also added some fire to the
album!!!! Thank y'all man!!!

F.E.D.S. Magazine: We heard you been hitting the weight getting right
do you have any health concerns?

Joell Ortiz:  Yea man been in the gym. Just wanted to get right. I run
daily and do calisthenics. I feel so much better than I did before.
Tryna stick around for my family, friends, and fans. The Yaowa Army is
strong!!!

F.E.D.S. Magazine: Any shout outs before we rap this up?
