The Dog Father of Hip Hop Who Became A Lion
West Coast stand up!!! When I think of West Coast Hip Hop one Emcee comes to mind. His swag, his demeanor, his trend setting and his suave is just a few things that have captivated the world and definitely kept the music world watching for over a decade.
Rapper Snoop Dog hit the scene in 1992 when Hip Hop Icon Dr.Dre debuted him on “The Chronic” on the track Deep Cover. The world was introduced to a new type of hip hop flow when Snoop hit the airwaves. Calvin Broadus aka Snoop Dogg was born on October 20, 1971 in Long Beach, California. Like many artist Snoop was introduced to music through church. Broadus began singing in Golgotha Trinity Baptist Church and playing piano; when he was in sixth grade, he began rapping. Snoop continued finessing his
flow and eventually it paid off.
Life wasn’t always all glory for Snoop Dogg, as a teenager he had frequent encounters with the law and allegations of him joining the infamous Rolling 20’s Crip Gang started fueling more negativity for him that would eventually create issues in his life and career. After graduating high school Snoop was arrested for possession of cocaine and following the next 3 years of his life spent time in and out of prison. However, Snoop kept his focus on his music and eventually was signed to Death Row Records in 1993 and released his first solo album titled “Doggy Style”.
When Doggy Style hit the charts it introduced hip hop and the world to a new era of music. G-funk and Gangsta rap collaborated and it took the charts by storm. Doggy Style debuting at No. 1 on both the Billboard 200 and Billboard Hot R&B/Hip-Hop Songs charts. Selling almost a million copies in the first week of its release, Doggystyle became certified 4× platinum. Snoop would continue to top the charts blowing his competition out the frame with hits like "What's My Name" and "Gin & Juice". With his smooth flow and laid back demeanor the world knew and could not deny Snoop Dogg was here for the duration.
In 1997, Snoop Dogg eventually parted ways with “Death Row Records” and signed to “No Limit Records”, where he remained until 2006. His career on the label was just as successful as former label “Death Row Records” Snoop continued his multi-platinum sales and ventured into other avenues of entertainment such as film and television, coaching and much more.
One of Snoop favorite past times as many know is cheifing and he has never hid his love for the chronic. In 2012, after one of many trips to Jamaica, The Rapper decided it was time for a new path on his journey and converted to Rastafari and coined his new alias Snoop Lion and released his reggae album and documentary, “Reincarnated” which takes us on a walk through his experiences in Jamaica.
Twenty-Three years later this Emcee, Author, Writer, Actor, Husband and Father has proven to never judge a book by its cover and even if you face obstacles you can overcome them. Snoop Dogg has now reincarnated and revaluated from Snoop Dogg to Snoop Lion. We salute you Snoop and wish you much more continued success in your journey.
