"STRAIGHT OUTTA HIGHBRIDGE"
“Nigga this is what that Jungle do. That jungle turned me into a monsta. That jungle made me go harder” (A Boogie - Jungle). Meek Mill was seen on Instagram quoting the young upcoming artist A Boogie’s song, ‘Bag on Me’, “And I never laugh at a nigga if he doin bad cause nigga I done been thru that shit”, and DJ Khaled posted on Instagram saluting A Boogie for his upcoming success (Revolt Tv).
The streets have been asking when New York would bring out another rap sensation, this summer brought a fire new artist; A Boogie, 20, from Highbridge, BX. He signed with the Independent Label, Highbridge, releasing two mixtapes in a four month span. A Boogie has a fanbase of over 8.6 million on his direct YouTube account and over 23.3 million plays on SoundCloud.
He’s getting a lot of love for someone from Highbridge, Highbridge hasn’t been on the map in years! How did he do it? Highbridge; overpopulated with Dominicans and African’s, two cultures simultaneously existing together. Living in poverty with high ratings of single mother households which contributes to the crime rate, the high school dropout rate, social issues, drug infestation and other societal problems. “Everybody looking at me like, ‘He’s just some young nigga coming out the hood, he’s going to forget about everybody.’ That’s the regular story that’s going on. But fuck it; I know what’s going on...everybody rap in Highbridge, everyone grew up rappin’ or playing basketball. That’s all we knew. Nobody on the block even knew I rap [laughs], I was shy at first.” (A Boogie Wit Da Hoodie - XXL).
A Boogie wants to be a legend and is definitely putting on for his city, he has managed to create his own sound, gather the support of his city, community, nightclubs and radio stations. In April, A Boogie sold out and performed at BB Kings, as the crowd roared his name, he came out with a intense performance. He has a melodic flow a new sound he likes to call Trap&B and Rap. In July, he appeared on HOT 97 with Don Q and killed a freestyle, shortly after, Funkmaster Flex made a evening mix with hits. Two mainstream A Boogie flavored songs like “My Shit” and “Bando”. His first mixtape, Highbridge the Label: The Takeover: Vol. 1 shares a skit of the BB Kings performance and hits like, “Half on a Baby”, “Bag on Me”, and “Not a Regular Person”, each song showing his versatile style and giving a taste of Highbridge at the same time. His most recent mixtape Artist: The Mixtape shows him in his bag heartbroken, he produced hits such as “Friend Zone”, “Jungle”, and “Still Think About You”. But even through a bad breakup he still bounces back with hits and something his audience can relate too. The Bronx is home to some of hip-hop’s firsts anthem and hitmakers. Kurtis Blow, The Sugarhill Gang, Fat Joe, Big Pun, is A Boogie next?
