Joyner Lucas
Wow. I just watched the Ross Cappichioni music video that was written
and directed by the artist Joyner Lucas. It is Joyner’s depiction of a
true story that occurred in 2007 of a young man who was shot multiple
times by his so-called friend and survived; all for a gang initiation.
The video shows the victim’s and the killer’s version of the story;
all in one. Joyner has a very unique way of telling a story through
his music and videos. Some visuals may be hard to swallow. Like in
his track Happy Birthday, it addresses a young adult having a child
before he is ready. Some stories may be hard to tell, but he seems be
the one chosen to address it head on. Joyner Lucas who was born and
raised in Worchester, Massachusetts is not only an artist but he
writes his own treatments and produces his own videos. His technique
is to write the video first and then he writes his songs. You might
remember him from the BET Sprite cipher round in 2015.
Today, most rappers write about clothes, money, and jewelry; but not
Joyner. He raps about being broke and other social issues that
affect his community. He began writing music at the age of 7 when
other children were playing with their toys. “At the age of 10 he
convinced his father to let him record his debut song “annihilate ‘em”
at a nearby studio and instantly knew the booth was his doorway to
destiny. “(1. Joyner Lucas is a Nomadic Explosion of Wit, Passion, and
Lyricism). Growing up, his father mainly focused on him being a
rapper; there were no other options. His Father who was also a
producer and felt he should do club tracks but he felt he was too
young to talk about being in a club; he just wanted to rap. This
artist knew early on what type of music he wanted to do. He wanted his
audience to be able to relate to his music.
“In 2007, the emerging rapper changed his name to Future Joyner and
joined forces with his uncle (producer Cyrus tha Great), Sheen
Philips, and DJ Prince to form the “Film Skool Rejekts”. After, the
Atlanta rapper “Future” emerged he decided to drop the name Future and
use his government name to create Joyner Lucas. In 2013, Their mixtape
“Workprint: The Greatest Mixtape of All Time” featuring Joyner along
with his talented team created waves in underground hip hop circles
popping up on major blog sites such as hiphopdx.com & 2dopeboyz.com
(2. NewEnglandHipHop.com). In 2013, after performing at a strip club,
Joyner was approached by investors with a partnership offer to do
music where he would have full control and bring in his own team. He
accepted the offer and also received partial ownership and became the
face of Dead Silence LLC.
His latest release came out on April 15, 2015, titled “Along Came
Joyner”. Like I mentioned above, he is a pioneer for the youth in my
eyes on some level because of his lyrics. His approach is definitely
in your face and may be hard for some to swallow but hopefully Joyner
will stay true to his gift and continue to follow his vision. Joyner’s
slogan is to F.A.D. (F**K All Distractions)!!! His current goals are
to keep gaining recognition for his art and from what I have seen so
far from this artist, that is a plan that is going to happen without a
doubt. Check him out!!
