Kodak Black
“I’m Better Than Tupac & Biggie” Kodak Black tweeted on 4/5/16 at
12:52 pm. “I say that so you know where my head at… People just see
the shine they don’t see the grind; the bags under my eyes from
grindin… A lot of setbacks and stepping stones so I kept stepping on.
I ain’t finna let nothing stop me!” - Kodak XXL
interview.
The Haitian American, Kodak Black, 19, from Pompano, FL quietly
signed to Atlantic Records over a year ago from his buzz hit “SKRT”
and reaching over 22 million views on YouTube for hit song “No
Flockin” -both from his 2014 mixtape Heart of the Projects. As his
career began to jump off, Kodak was incarcerated in May 2015 for eight
charges: robbery, false imprisonment, marijuana and weapon possession
in Broward County. Kodak Black who’s real name is Dieuson Octave has
had a lot on his plate to process and enough time to sit down and
figure out what the hell he’s going to do. In 2015, while
incarcerated, he recorded and released his single “Institution”. Some
lines from the song, “You hearing rumors I caught 11 years I hope you
understand it’s the life I live… I’m in here writing raps, in here
getting fat but one day i’ll be back they can’t hold me forever.” This
not only sends a message to his family and fans, but to the rap game,
letting everyone know he’s working on something. In 2015, he brought
hits such as: Shoulda Woulda, Project Baby 2, Skrilla and Like Dat,
let’s not forget to mention he released his mixtape Project Baby.
“Institution” showed his fans through all of his hardships he
continues to move forward with his life in pursuing music.
This year, Kodak released his mixtape Lil Big Pac while
incarcerated. Kodak was featured on XXL magazine cover for it’s 9th
Annual Freshman Issue. He also landed a spot on HNHH.com
(HotNewHipHop.com) top 100 his songs “Vibin in this Bih feat. Gucci
Mane and “Too Many Years” feat. PnB Rock both from Lil Big Pac.
Jen DeLeon did a interview on Kodak on YouTube showing the public
who he is; a goofy, well rounded hustler and scholar, completely
different than the seemingly arrogant comment made in XXL’s interview
“I’m better than Tupac and Biggie.” With such a statement one can only
ask, who the fuck is he? Fans and commentators on Twitter retweeted
some in favor, most telling him to get the fuck out of here. How can
you compare yourself to two legends who didn’t get to fulfill their
plan? Slow down Kodak I don’t think Cole, Kendrick, Wayne or Yeezy
would appreciate you saying that. I would mention Drake but he’s been
seen on video openly vibing to Kodak’s music, some even compare Kodak
to Drake; both two young aspiring rappers hungry and changing the
game. Words from Kodak “make something out of nothing it’s nothing
where i’m from can your boy do something productive.”
